GGE research project: Geothermal Energy Drillings at E.ON ERC


Geothermal energy plays an important role in the energy supply of the E.ON ERC main building. In April 2016, a special double-U-tube probe was lowered into the ground through an additional geothermal energy drilling behind the main building of E.ON ERC. This special probe is ring-shaped and has sensors to measure the temperature, flow velocity and flow direction of the ground water. The construction of the probe allows the observation of the ground water in immediate surrounding of the borehole heat exchanger. Ultimately, the aim of the research project of the institute of Applied Geophysics and Geothermal Energy is to optimize the necessary depth, costs and number of geothermal energy drillings. Reason enough for the television crew of the WDR Lokalzeit Aachen to make a feature of the drilling at E.ON ERC.
