Construction of the world-wide unique modular lage battery storage begins in Aachen


The official start of construction of the modular large battery storage M5BAT took place in Aachen. Such storages can be important landmarks for the development of renewable energies, as they contribute significantly to system stability. In addition, they open up a wide range of application fields. The planned power of five megawatts, as well as the high modularity - with different battery technologies linked together - make the "M5BAT" (Modular multi - megawatt multi - technology medium voltage battery storage) storage system called unique in the world.

M5BAT is promoted as part of the "Förderinitiative Energiespeicher " of the Federal Ministry of Economy and Energy with a total of 6.7 million euros. Project partners are the E.ON Energy Research Center, the Institute of Power Systems and Energy Economics at the RWTH Aachen ( IAEW ), the energy company E.ON, the battery producer Exide Technologies GmbH with its business unit GNB® Industrial Power and the inverter manufacturer SMA Solar Technology AG .

"E.ON is investing as part of its innovation activities in a wide range of future technologies for energy storage. Large battery storages are of particular interest due to their flexible application possibilities. The anticipated knowledge from M5BAT is valuable for the entire energy sector, in particular as support on the way to a low-CO2 power generation" said Bernhard Reutersberg, Chief Markets Officer at E.ON Board, responsible for Technology & Innovation.

The storage will be installed in a former modified office building. Overall, the battery and all other components of the current storage will be spread over two floor and on the roof on an area of ​​about 500 m. The building renovation is carried out by E.ON, the coordination of the installation of the batteries is assumed by the E.ON Energy Research Center. The manufacturer Exide Technologies and SMA Solar Technology AG provide the technical components. The completion of the battery storage is planned for mid-2016.
