Due to the progressing automation in industry and e-mobility, compact and efficient synchronous machines are receiving increased attention. Permanent magnet synchronous machines are in demand for their high efficiency and power density. Reluctance synchronous machines, on the other hand, are characterized by their cost-effective and robust design. The required compact design volume leads to highly magnetically utilized machines resulting in strong saturation effects. This thesis presents models and methods for drive analysis considering these harmonics. The machine model with spatial harmonics and the dynamic loss mapping allow the analysis of different control concepts without coupled finite element models (FEM). The presented models are parameterized using FEM calculations or directly with measured data. Subsequently, a control concept for the reduction of current harmonics is explained. Furthermore, design methods for compact reluctance synchronous machines are presented and validated. Based on the analytical predesign, an optimization of the electromagnetic design is analyzed using the statistical design of experiments method. Furthermore, an effective method for torque ripple reduction using asymmetric barrier structures is introduced for reluctance synchronous machines. Finally, the modification of electrical sheet to reduce the leakage flux in the rotor is presented.
