Together with experts, they examine the question of whether electricity should be transported over long distances using direct current. Prof. De Doncker, head of the E.ON ERC, is an expert in the discussion.

An underground demonstration network is being built at FEN research campus

This year the International Women's Day took place on 08.03.2018. In this spirit, Prof. Ferdinanda Ponci from ACS posted a poster in honour of the women at the institute. To show that more and more women are working in technical professions. This is another fundamental step towards equality.

On February 15th 2018,  Dr. Johannes Teyssen , CEO of E.ON SE, will give a lecture at RWTH Aachen University's Generali Hall ( Super C, 6th Floor). The lecture will take place at 6:30 p.m.

The project „Temperature Sensor Module for Groundwater flow detection around borehole heat exchangers“ of GGE is one of the Top 5 “Geothermal Innovation Projects of 2018“!

Guest speaker Dr. -Ing. Xiang Wu will talk about "The Develpoment of HVDC Technology and Systems in State Grid Corporation of China".

On November 17th, Prof. Dr. Michael Weinhold , CTO Energy Management Division of Siemens, will give a lecture at RWTH Aachen University Building Super C. The lecture will take place at 7 p.m.

Sönke Reiche (GGE) received the “Best Oral Presentation Award” for his talk entitled “The formation of seafloor sediment waves by internal waves along the Israel continental slope“ during the 77^th annual meeting of the German Geophysical Society in Potsdam.

The paper presenting the open-source tool TEASER has been published in the Journal of Building Performance Simulation on Taylor & Francis Online.

The project ENSURE (funded by the BMBF within the framework of the Kopernikus initiative) was launched with a kick-off meeting involving all project partners. The institutes ACS, FCN and PGS of the E.ON Energy Research Center (E.ON ERC) are also involved.

Dipl.-Ing. Andreas Bader from Stadtkraft, Düsseldorf gave a lecture about the topic “Forecasting method for intraday power prices leading to market closure” on Thursday, October 13, 2016 at 04:00 pm in room 00.24. After the presentation there was time for snacks and drinks in the foyer.

We are very happy for Patrick Elison, who was awarded the Friedrich-Wilhelm prize of the RWTH Aachen University for his cooperation between the Schlumberger GmbH and his master thesis. His master thesis was about the topic: “Influence of uncertainty in thermal conductivity on thermal basin modelling” and was advised by our institute GGE. Patrick Elison graduated from IDEA-League master degree course “Applied Geophysics” (2013-2015).

On the 6^th of October the E.ON Energy Research Center celebrated its 9^th Annual Meeting. This time the meeting took place at the ENERGETICON and it was focused on the topic of “10 Years of Research on Urban Energy Systems”. As in the years before many representatives of industry and research were present.

E.ON plans to continue a successful cooperation with RWTH Aachen University and has thus extended the cooperation agreement by another five years. E.ON executive board member Karsten Wildberger and RWTH Rector Ernst Schmachtenberg signed a corresponding agreement today.

Six executives of RWTH Aachen University were awarded for their family friendly personnel management.

The Institute for Energy Efficient Buildings and Indoor Climate, E.ON Energy Research Center, RWTH Aachen University released “AixLib”, a Modelica model-library that contains more than 400 items which focus on building performance simulations.

Second edition of "Einführung in die Geophysik" (GGE) is published

To present science in an unusual way and at an unusual time – this is the idea behind the “5 to 12” Science Night.

Mark J. Embrechts gave a lecture about the topic "A Brief History of Big Data Analytics" on the 11^th November  2015 in room 00.24 at 4:00 p.m. After the presentation there was time for snacks and drinks in the foyer.

On October 28, 2015, Reinhard Madlener, Director of the institute for Future Energy Consumer Needs and Behavior (FCN) gave a lecture about the topic: "Spatial Economic and Multi-Criteria Analysis of the Optimal Siting of Wind Power Plants". The seminar took place at Baker Hall, Carnegie Mellon University and was presented under the auspices of CEDM and the department of Engineering and Public Policy.

Prof. De Doncker and Prof. Monti were invited to the International Symposium "Towards A Transatlantic Emobility Market - Vehicles and Grids of the Future", which was organized in Ispra, Italy by the Joint Research Center of the European Commission.

E.ON Energy Research Center, RWTH Universität und OPAL-RT hosted a real time seminar in Aachen on Monday, 28^th of Septemer 2015. This seminar dealt with the real-time simulation of power grids and power electronic systems.

Hans-Joachim Preuss, Member of the Managing Board of German GIZ (Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit) has presented the activities of GIZ. Focus was on energy and climate related activities. GIZ is the government owned entity in charge of international co-operation. GIZ has an annual budget of 2 milliard EUR, employing some 16.400. GIZ is one of the most important contractors for German industries, consultants etc.

After three years of research and development, the COOPERATE program (Control and optimization for positive energy neighbourhood) is now complete with successful experiments concluded at two test sites: one each in France and Ireland.

The official start of construction of the modular large battery storage M5BAT took place in Aachen. Such storages can be important landmarks for the development of renewable energies, as they contribute significantly to system stability. In addition, they open up a wide range of application fields. The planned power of five megawatts, as well as the high modularity - with different battery technologies linked together - make the "M5BAT" (Modular multi - megawatt multi - technology medium voltage battery storage) storage system called unique in the world.

Induction of the Center for Wind Power Drives, CWD. The NRW Construction and Real Estate Agency, BLB, in Aachen handed RWTH the key to the research building. The centerpiece of the new building on Campus Melaten is the four megawatt test bench for wind energy plants.

From the 22nd until 25th of June 2015 the 6th International Symposium On Power Electronics For Distributed Generation Systems (PEDG) took place in Aachen, Germany.

The Japanese scientiest Shin-ichi Tanabe visited the E.ON ERC. Scope of his visit was to improve the international cooperation with regards to thermal comfort and building energy technology.

Dipl.-Ing. Ralf Berker from BERKER IMPULS gave a presentation about "The Economy of Using high-alloy Material in Power Station Construction" on Mai 19th 2015 in room 00.24 at 4:30 p.m. After the presentation there was time for snacks and drinks in the foyer.

Dorothea Ernst from CEO Celviva gave a presentation about "VISION 2050: what does that mean for today?" on May 12th 2015 at 4:30 p.m. in room 00.24. After the presentation there was a disussion round and a "get-together".

The 9^th Project manager Meeting for EnEff:Stadt took place in Aachen from May 11^th-12^th.

On the 26th of March the 8th Annual Meeting of the E.ON Energy Research Center took place. This year’s focus lied on: "Future Urban Energy Systems". As in the last years many representatives from industry and research were present.

On March, 9^th to 11^th the International Renewable Energy Conference IRES organized by Eurosolar took place in Düsseldorf and for the first time it was held at the same time and same place together with the Energy Storage Conference and the trade fair exhibition with more than 100 exhibitors at Messe Düsseldorf.

Harry Saunders, Managing Director of Decision Processes Incorporated gave a presentation about „Energy Efficiency, Consumption, and Behavior: Are Rebound Effects Played Up or Down?“on March 5th 2015 at 4:0 p.m. in room 303, Wüllnerstraße 9.

After the presentation there was a discussion and a “get-together”.

Dr. Antonio Morandi from University of Bologna gave a presentation about „Superconducting DC transmission and distributions: concepts and applications“on February 2nd 2015 at 4:30 p.m. in room 00.24. After the presentation there was a discussion round and a “get-together”.

In context of the colloquium-series on power electronics and electrical facitlities Dr. -Ing. Jürgen Reinert from SMA Solar Technology AG gave a presentation about "Photovoltaik: Status und Ausblick" on January 28th 2015 in room 00.24.

After the presentation there was time for snacks and drinks in the foyer.

In the context of the E.ON Energy Research Center Colloquium Series Bert Stuji from Innovation Energy Delta Institute gave a presentation about "Energy Innovation - a reflection on trends, scenarios and strategies" on December 2, 2014. During the following get-together all the participants had the opportunity to discuss this topic.

In the context of the E.ON Energy Research Center Colloquium Series Prof. Martin Saar from the ETH Zürich gave a presentation about "Extracting geothermal energy while soring CO₂" on November 25th, 2014.

The RWTH "Wissenschaftsnacht" took place at November 14^th.

Within the framework of the excellence initiative, the RWTH Aachen has introduced the "RWTH Fellow" Program. The RWTH Fellowship is awarded to assistant, associate and full professors with outstanding research achievements.

Professors Wolfgang Bleck, Rik W. De Doncker, Josef Hegger, Beate Herpertz-Dahlmann, Fritz Klocke, Wolfgang Schröder, Christian Trautwein, and Bettina Wiese have all been named RWTH Fellows. With this title, RWTH honors excellent, outstanding professors at RWTH Aachen with outstanding research achievements that have significantly contributed to the University's success. The title also carries an award of 50,000 Euros, which can be used for research.

Three scientist from E.ON Energy Research Center participated in the Annex 60 Meeting at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory from 15^th - 17^th September 2014.

Dr. Norbert Klitzsch received an award for the best teaching at GeoTag 2014.

7^th EMEE Workshop 2014 on “Empirical  Methods in Energy Economics”

Rizqy Averous and Marco Stieneker visited the Power Electronics & Machines for Wind and Water Applications PEMWA 2014 Symposium in Milwaukee, WI, USA and presented their papers "Performance Characteristics of a Doubly-FedGenerator on a Test-Rig with Full-ScaleConverter-Based Grid Emulator" and "Optimum Design of Medium-Voltage DC Collector Grids Depending on the Offshore-Wind-Park Power".

The Final Report "Adaptive Control" can be accessed online via the Technischen Informationsbibliothek (Technical Information Library) of Hannover University.

With about  90 visitors, the fifth Symposium "Buildings - Energy - Technology" at the E.ON Energy Research Center was well attended.

For this years BauSIM in Aachen, 122 Papers were accepted. BauSIM 2014 will take place in Aachen from 22.-24^th September with the main topic "Human-Centered Building"

In the context of the E.ON Energy Research Center Colloquium Series, Mareike Schenk and Christoph Loef from the Institute for Power Electronics and Electrical Drives (ISEA), RWTH Aachen, gave a presentation about “Patentwesen” on May 14^th and on May 27^th, 2014.

During the following get-together all the participants had the opportunity to discuss this topic.

ACS and EBC presented the 2DSM concept on this years Hannover Trade Fair from April 7^th-11^th in Hall 16, Stand E27.

On the 3rd of April the 7th Annunal Meeting of the E.ON Energy Research Center took place.The focus was on:"Innovation and Energy Markets". As in the last years many representatives from industry and research were present.

After the third place last year the E.ON Energy Research Center indoor soccer team reached again third place at the RWTH Indoor Soccer Cup on Saturday, March 29^th.

This year a group of 13 girls from Aachen and environment attended the "Girls'Day“ at the E.ON Energy Research Center. They passed workshops in the topics "Energieerzeugung, -verbrauch und -einsparung in den Bereichen Elektrotechnik, Maschinenwesen, Georessourcen und Wirtschaftswissenschaften".

Members of the E.ON Energy Research Center gave two keynotes and displayed five posters on the symposium on energy optimized Building 2014 in Essen.

A building model adapted to the complexity of city district scale applications was developed based on national standards, The results were published in a peer-reviewed journal paper at Building and Enviroment.

The IBPSA-Germany and Austria conference BauSIM2014 took place from September 22 – 24, 2014 in Aachen (Germany).

A system that helps to reduce your energy bill by automatically detecting if you are present or not. This system was described in a recently published peer-reviewed journal paper at Energy & Buildings.

In the context of the E.ON Energy Research Center Colloquium Series Prof. Dr. Jayant Baliga from the North Carolina State University gave a presentation about "Research and Scholarship for Enabling a Sustainbable Society" on July 17, 2013.

The Geotag 2013 – organized this year by the Institute for Applied Geophysics (GGE) – took place 21 June 2013 at E.ON ERC.

This year, the E.ON Energy Research Center again participated very successfully in “Girl’s Day”. 15 girls from Aachen and beyond got an exciting insight into Energy Research.

E.ON ERC has a Facebook site that shows actual information on research, courses and events.

RWTH Aachen University’s Melaten campus and the campus at the Research Centre Jülich are supplied via their own heating networks. In order to identify potential for optimization throughout the entire energy usage chain, these complex hydraulic systems have to be dynamically recorded.

Therefore, by the end of 2014 a simulation process was developed in the project “EnEff:Campus” which depicts the thermodynamic processes of the heat supply in a time-resolved and detailed manner. The aim is to show the possibilities of reducing the university properties’ primary energy demand.
