The Institute for Automation of Complex Power Systems focuses on the scientific and technological developments necessary for the transition to the next generation energy grids. In particular, an intelligent and flexible electrical grid must allow for a new ways of managing power flows at all levels, particularly at distribution level.
The multinational team of ACS researchers targets the seamless integration of the advances in power electronics, control design and communication technology, which are major enablers of the transition. This will lead to an intelligent grid with high penetration of renewable generation, active involvement of customers and concepts such as e-mobility, commonly referred to as Smart Grids.
The research at ACS is focused on the following large scientific areas:
Distributed measurements and observers
Agent based control
wide area network stability
control under uncertain conditions.
ACS constantly develops and expands an advanced testing facility , a research topic in itself, installed in the ACS laboratory with unique custom solutions for
real-time simulation of power grids,
hardware in the loop testing,
power hardware in the loop testing,
mixed power, control and communication simulation.
